Why the name "St-Marc"? |
|
In the middle ages, during the time of
the great cathedrals, each trade had a patron saint. Saint Mark (or Saint Marc in French),
depicted with his mythical winged lion, was the patron saint of glass workers. Today,
the great carnivores are more readily associated with the financial world, but that's
another story.

| 2. |
How is it done? |
|
A glass pane of the appropriate thickness
is cut to the desired dimensions and a vinyl mask is applied to it. Your selected design
is hand-drawn on that mask and then cut with a blade. All areas to be sandblasted are
exposed by removing the mask in decreasing order of depth. During the sandblasting, the
velocity of the abrasive and exposure time are controlled with great care to engrave the
different parts of the drawing to just the right depth. No re-masking is possible. And
watch out for those scratches! The finished product is then unmasked, cleaned, and
wrapped carefully. And that's it!

| 3. |
How much does it cost? |
|
The cost of a piece depends on several factors:
- the technique employed (a deep sandblasting or a surface de-polishing),
- the size of the piece,
- the complexity of the drawing, and
- the thickness of the glass pane.

| 4. |
Do you have any catalogs to choose from? |
|
Given the custom nature of our work, we
have as many designs as we have customers. Nonetheless, to help inspire you, to narrow
down your choice, we have catalogs of small drawings indexed by theme. These have
been used as preliminary drawings in previous projects. A wide variety of objects
and themes are depicted.

Do you deliver and install your pieces? |
|
Yes. Most of our business is concentrated
in the greater Montreal area. We have often delivered finished products outside this
area with no problem.

| 9. |
Why should I deal with you, rather than someone
else?
|
|
The well-known modesty of most artists hinders me from freely answering that
question. Let's just say you should see us before you buy your next glass
engraving piece.
I could tell you the story of this poor soul who walked in our workshop one
day with a big parcel under his arm. We unwrapped the thing and discovered
an "engraving" that was just purchased in a glass store for his new home.
He asked if I could 'fix' it for him-make it presentable. The best I can do,
I told him, is to compact it into a smaller package… Which we did!
Now that we have produced a new piece for him, our customer only has one
regret--he can no longer walk around unshaven in his own home because
of the stylish ambiance this new piece imparts to his house...

What do you think of big chains such as Costco, Walmart and
others?
|
|
One has to be patient. In time, and a bit of management help, these companies will
offer an almost acceptable substitute product. In the meantime, don't be satisfied
with these warehouse stores; for once experience the complete and personal joy of
acquiring something for yourself, to your own taste.
